The owner of the collapsed building, Trudie Clingenborg, collaborated with hp architects to develop a plan for the new building: a shop on the ground floor and two apartments above.

The project posed challenges not only due to the tight construction site and logistics but also because of the unique details on the facade, which demanded craftsmanship.

The historical cellar pit was preserved and repurposed as both a cellar and a foundation. To minimize the overall weight of the building (thus limiting material usage), StoneCycling’s bespoke WasteBasedSlips® in a special size of 190x90x40mm, along with a variety of corners, strips, and soles, were employed.

WasteBasedSlips® can be found not only in the plinth and the balcony but also in the cornice of the building, interspersed with softly glossy green and grey ceramic elements — a collaboration with local artist Christine Jetten from Den Bosch, who specializes in creating glazed ceramics.

Historical Facade Composition

During the research into historical images from the past two centuries, it became apparent that the collapsed building on Markt (market) Den Bosch, had undergone a patchwork of renovations. Not only on the inside – which proved to be its downfall – but also in its appearance.

The new building pays homage to the memory of what had collapsed in many ways. It presents itself as two separate buildings, with the corner building notably retaining its distinctive corner identity. The facade facing Market Square originated historically as a front facade, and this is recognizable in the new construction.

With great care, attention, and craftsmanship, a thoughtful facade composition was meticulously crafted, honouring this location, the surrounding buildings, and its history.
