Circular Construction in Amsterdam

With 8000 planned homes in the next twenty years, Strandeiland is one of the largest future city districts in Amsterdam.

Located on the IJburg Bay, with a 750-metre long city beach and on the south side a rugged natural edge on the IJmeer, this is a new part of Amsterdam… and it’s one with strong circular ambitions.

To provide all the buildings in the area with energy, a substation is needed to convert higher voltage into lower voltage electricity that can be transported to the different neighbourhoods.

Studies show that up to 2030, six to eight new electricity substations are needed to facilitate the growth and sustainability of the city.

Orange Brick with a Punch

Strandeiland is one of the last of the six islands on IJburg to be developed. But in terms of sustainable ambitions, the island is far ahead. And the expectations are high.

The City of Amsterdam presented its strategy to become the first 100% circular city in the world by 2050. At this new location in IJburg, the aim is to not only build emission-free and energy-efficient but also climate-proof, nature-inclusive and with electric shared transport to develop a true ‘sustainable city’.

120.000 square metres will be made available for commercial and social functions. Plus nearly 6 acres of greenery for recreation. Because Strandeiland will be a living environment, it is not only important to have an excellent electricity network, but also for the substation to have good aesthetics.

Aesthetic Sustainability

Powerhouse Company approached us in Spring 2020 with the request for a durable and aesthetically beautiful orange stone for the Strandeiland substation. That became the Orange Punched that will be applied in special detail. We will use a combination of whole bricks, protruding heads and partly also brick strips where ventilation is required.

For the exact location of the substation, have a look at the zoning plan of the municipality of Diemen.

The development of Strandeiland is expected to be completed in 2040. StoneCycling will be delivering the first stones in 2021. Construction of the first homes is expected to start in 2023.
