Sustainable Redevelopment

StoneCycling is proud to be part of yet another innovative design project in The Netherlands where technology, sustainability and a healthy working environment are core elements.

EDGE Amsterdam West is an existing office building from the 1970s by EDGE (formerly OVG), currently undergoing a redevelopment to a design by de Architekten Cie.

The project has APG, Alliander and Intertrust as key tenants.

History & Future

Originally, the building was designed by A.N. Oyevaar (from the agency Oyevaar Stolle Van Gool, the predecessor of de Architekten Cie.), and in the redevelopment, the architectural firm retains the character of the building, while upgrading its features to modern-day standards – and adding a futuristic element in the form of a glass dome covering the unused outdoor space and turning it into the new heart of the building.

All facades are completely renovated, and the building will be equipped with solar panels on the roof and cold heat storage underground.

Light courts will also be added for additional daylight (and thus a better work environment) and four prominent stairs replace the elevator shafts to encourage tenants to make healthy choices.

Pilot Project

What is unique in our partnership, is that demolition waste from the site will be upcycled into brand new WasteBasedSlips® for the interior of the building. The materials that we will be using will largely determine the appearance of the final project.

We have gotten a lot of requests to use ‘own’ waste for projects, so this is an important first step into possibly releasing this internationally in the near future.

Innovation

The so-called “IP Backbone” of EDGE will serve as the main connector and will incorporate the latest advances in IoT and AI.

This will, for example, allow tenants to use a smart app for workplace customization as well as offer in-depth insights about their surroundings and track the building’s energy efficiency through dashboards enabled by big data analytics.

EDGE further reports that the project will be fully energy-positive upon completion.

The core and exterior of the main building, measuring 47,000 m2, will be completed in the spring of 2021. Redevelopment of the neighbouring and associated 5,500 m2 building must also be completed by mid-2022.

An absolute eye-catcher in the architectural landscape of Amsterdam, this redevelopment will become an office where people can collaborate, develop and be inspired daily – and admire our WasteBasedSlips®, of course!
